On 6 Bashance of the Coptic Calendar, St. Isaac El-Defrawi was martyred. He was born in the city of Defra, district of Tanta. When he grew up, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a vision and told him to go to the town of Towwa, district of Beba, to receive the crown of martyrdom. He instantly went to his parents to bid them farewell. They wept and forbade him from doing that. The angel of the Lord appeared to him again and took him out of the town. When he arrived at Towwa, he professed his faith before the Governor saying: "I believe in the Lord Christ." The Governor placed him under guard until he had returned from the city of Nakyos.

It happened when St. Isaac was passing by with a soldier that a blind man, sitting on the wayside, asked him to give him sight. He said to him: "Do not say give me, but let it be according to your faith," and then he prayed to the Lord Christ for his sake, and the man was given sight straightaway. When the soldier saw that, he believed. When the Governor returned, the soldier confessed the Lord Christ before him; he ordered that the soldier’s head be cut off, and he received the crown of martyrdom.

The Governor became angry at St. Isaac and tormented him severely, then sent him to the city of El-Bahnasa to be tortured there. On the way, he asked for a drink, and a sailor gave him a little water; the sailor had only one eye. The Saint took some of the water and poured it over him, and the man received sight in his blind eye immediately. When the Saint arrived at El-Bahnasa, the Governor tortured him severely, but the Lord comforted and healed him. Finally, the Governor ordered him to be beheaded, and he received the crown of life.

Some of the faithful took his body and carried it back to his town Defra and buried him there. They then built a church in his name.

نشأته

ولد القديس إسحق ببلدة دفرا، التابعة لطنطا، وعاش في حياة تقوية مقدسة. لما أثار الإمبراطور دقلديانوس الاضطهاد كان القديس قد بلغ الخامسة والعشرين من عمره، وإذ كان نائمًا في الحقل مع الحصادين رأى ملاك الرب يقول له: "سلام لك يا إسحق رجل الله التقي؛ لماذا أنت نائم والجهاد قائم؟!"، ثم أراه إكليلًا فالتهب قلبه بنوال بركة الاستشهاد.

إذ لاح النهار ودّع الشاب والديه لينطلق إلى مدينة طوه، تابعة لببا بصعيد مصر، فمنعاه من الخروج. وفي منتصف الليل أضاء البيت كله بنور فائق، ثم ظهر الملاك وشجع إسحق لينطلق ويتمم شوق قلبه، وفي الحال ترك مدينته وانطلق إلى طوه.

استشهاده

التقى القديس إسحق بوالي المدينة. حيث أعلن إيمانه بقوة وشجاعة، فهدده وأمر بحبسه حتى يعود من نقيوس. انطلق إسحق مع أحد الجنود من أمام الوالي إلى الحبس، وفي الطريق التقى برجل أعمى، صلى إلى الله من أجله فانفتحت عيناه، وللوقت آمن الجندي نفسه، وعند عودة الوالي اعترف الجندي بالإيمان وسلّم رقبته للسيف لينال إكليل الشهادة بفرح.

اغتاظ الوالي وصمم أن يذيقه كل أنواع العذابات، فأرسله إلى ككليانوس والي البهنسا ليقوم بالتعذيب. وإذ كان بالسفينة مقيدًا طلب من أحد النوتية قليل ماء فأعطاه، وإذ شرب أخذ القليل من الماء المتبقي وصلى عليه وسكبه على عين الرجل النوتي التي كانت عمياء فانفتحت وأبصر بها كما بعينه الأخرى. التقى القديس بوالي البهنسا، الذي بدأ أولًا بملاطفته ليستميله لترك إيمانه فلم يفلح، وعندئذ صار يعذبه، وكان الرب يشفيه.

حدث أن كان أريانا يجول في البلاد يتشفى بمضايقة المسيحيين وتعذيبهم، وإذ التقى بككليانوس أخبره الأخير عن أمر إسحق الدفراوي، وروى له ما حدث معه، فاستلمه منه ليقوم هو أيضًا بدوره في التعذيب، وأخذه معه إلى أنصنا وصار يعذبه، وإذ لم يفلح أرسله إلى مدينة طوه حيث قطعت رأسه ونال إكليل الاستشهاد، وقد ظهر من جسده عجائب كثيرة.

جاء بعض المؤمنين وحملوا جسده، وأتوا به إلى بلده دفرا، ودفنوه هناك بإكرام عظيم، وبنوا كنيسة باسمه. تعيِّد الكنيسة القبطية بعيد استشهاده في 6 بشنس، وعيد تكريس كنيسته في 6 طوبة.
