Mother Dolagy lived in the village of Esna in Upper Egypt during the reign of Bishop Amonios, Bishop of Esna. She is one of the greatest martyrs who excelled in faith and power, and is considered the patron Saint of Esna and many regions of Upper Egypt.

After the birth of her fourth son, her husband passed away, causing her to become a widow. Her sons’ names were Soris, Horman, Abanoufa, and Shentas, who ploughed the land as skillful farmers. Mother Dolagy the great excelled in holding the words of the Gospel dear to her heart, showing great love to all.

Regarding herself and her four sons, they were pillars of faith to all the people in the village of Esna. Moreover, history records that she was extremely rich, yet she was very giving, providing much of her money to the poor and orphaned in the village. During that time, there reigned an emperor named Diocletian, who sent Arianos, the governor, to Esna because of the widespread spread of Christianity throughout all the lands of Upper Egypt.

Upon entering the great city of Esna, he was greeted by four youth who were ploughing in the fields. They came to him holding watermelons. Arianos inquired of these youth what faith they had and who they believed in, as well as a general inquiry of the town’s belief. On knowing that they were Christians, he ordered them to worship the idols. The youth rejected this with all authority, saying it was better for them to be tortured or killed than to offer incense to the idols. They began worshiping the Almighty Lord in Heaven, proclaiming the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, one God. When the people of Esna realized what had happened at the gates of the village, news spread rapidly to the city of Gamaleesh.

Mother Dolagy ran to the fields to stand by her sons in front of Governor Arianos. When she arrived, she stood before the governor and her children, strengthened them in the true faith, and declared her Christianity. This greatly encouraged her children, who were strengthened in their faith. Arianos was so angered by this that he ordered the death of all Christians in the region.

Mother Dolagy and the four sons spent the whole day and night going throughout the city strengthening the people before their death. History tells us that St. Mary appeared to them, strengthening them before their martyrdom, promising them that Jesus Christ had prepared heavenly crowns for them in heaven. In the morning, Arianos came to them, promising that if they worshipped the idols, they would not suffer any pain.

Mother Dolagy screamed in her loudest voice that Jesus Christ was her Savior, from the beginning of time to the end of time. The governor tried every possible means to make Mother Dolagy and her four sons worship the idols, but he failed miserably in all attempts. In anger, he ordered that they be killed immediately by cutting off their heads. Mother Dolagy pleaded that the soldiers cut the heads of her four sons first so that she could be sure they did not offer incense to idols after she was martyred.

The soldiers agreed and cut the heads of her sons on her knees. When she was reassured that her sons had reached heaven, the soldiers cut her head off, and she gained the crown of martyrdom.

The people of Esna took the bodies of these pure saints, buried them, and built a church in remembrance of them by the name of St. Dolagy and her four sons. During renovations in the church, they found the bodies five meters below the altar.

Her feast day is on the 6th of Pashons, which is equivalent to May 14th.

الشهيدة القديسة دولاجي

تُعتبر هذه الشهيدة بكر شهداء إسنا وشفيعة المدينة، ويعتبرها البعض شفيعة الصعيد كله.

في زمن الاضطهاد الذي أثاره الطاغية دقلديانوس، كانت منطقة إسنا بالصعيد الأعلى غنية بقديسيها من إكليروس وعلمانيين، متبتلين ومتزوجين. وقد سبق الحديث عنها أثناء حديثنا عن القديس أمونيوس أسقف إسنا. قام أريانوس والي أنصنا برحلة تجول في بلاد الصعيد ليرى مدى تنفيذ مراسيم الإمبراطور، ولكي يشبع شهوة قلبه في تعذيب المسيحيين وقتلهم، وقد تردد على هذه المدينة ثلاث مرات على الأقل.

الزيارة الأولى

قدمت المدينة باكورة شهدائها القديسة الأم دولاجي وأولادها.

الزيارة الثانية

قدمت المدينة بعض أراخنة الشعب.

الزيارة الثالثة

استشهدت الرشيدة وكل أهل المدينة، أما الثلاثة فلاحين فاستشهدوا إما في هذه الزيارة أو في زيارة لاحقة أثناء عودة أريانا وجنوده من جنوب إسنا.

لقاء مع الصبية القديسين

لم نسمع شيئًا عن زوج القديسة الأم دولاجي، ويبدو أنها كانت أرملة. كانت غنية وزعت ما لديها على الفقراء والمساكين. حالما دخل أريانوس والي أنصنا مدينة إسنا، قابله أربعة صبية أشقاء: صوروس وهرمان وأبانوفا وشنطاس، كانوا يسوقون دابة محملة بالبطيخ. أمرهم بالذهاب للسجود للأوثان، لكن الصبية رفضوا وأعلنوا مسيحيتم.

حاول الوالي إغرائهم فلم يفلح، فتوعدهم بالتعذيب حتى الموت، وأمهلهم ليتراجعوا عن إصرارهم.

الأم دولاجي تشجع أولادها

طار الخبر إلى الأم دولاجي، فذهبت مسرعة لمكانهم، وكانت تشجعهم وتقويهم أمام الوالي، فأمر بحبسهم جميعًا تمهيدًا لمحاكمتهم.

الأم تُعد أولادها للاستشهاد

في السجن كانت الأم دولاجي تصلي مع أولادها وتطلب عون الله ليثبتهم. بحديثها العذب، رفعت قلوبهم إلى السماء ليشتهوا نوال أكاليل المجد. وفي الليل ظهرت لهم السيدة العذراء لتشجعهم وتخبرهم أن السيد المسيح أعد لهم مكانًا أبديًا في السماء.

محاكمتهم

في الصباح استدعاهم الوالي وحاول مرة أخرى إجبارهم على عبادة الآلهة، فإذا بالأم دولاجي تصرخ معلنة إيمانها المسيحي، وأولادها يهتفون "نحن مسيحيون"، رافضين عبادة الآلهة الكاذبة. أُلقيت الأم وأولادها في السجن لتنفيذ حكم الإعدام.

استشهادهم

امتلأ أريانوس غضبًا وأمر بقطع رؤوسهم، وكان يُذبح أولادها على ركبتيها الواحد تلو الآخر، وكانت ترتل وتصلي، وأخيرًا قطعوا رأسها. ما زالت أجسادهم الطاهرة في الكنيسة التي تحمل اسمهم بمدينة إسنا حتى الآن.

تحتفل الكنيسة بعيد استشهادهم في السادس من شهر بشنس. كانت كنيسة السيدة الأم دولاجي تحت مستوى الأرض مدة حتى قام المرحوم الأميرلاى أبادير أديب ببناء كنيسة في نفس المكان على سطح الأرض.
