He was born on April 5, 1929, in the village of Dafsh, Samalout District, Minya Governorate, and departed on April 19 after a life full of spiritual struggle and hard work in asceticism and self-denial, following the example of the fathers of early monasticism and faithfully observing the commandments of the Holy Bible.

He was loving to all without distinction, never turning anyone away who sought his guidance and prayers. In his great humility, he would tenderly call even the youngest child “Mr,” showing angelic kindness and gentleness.

He left the world and went to the monastery at a young age—around 15 years old. He approached the door of monasticism in 1944 and received its blessing in 1947, becoming a monk at the age of eighteen. Historically, the day of his divine selection to join the ranks of the righteous, virgins, and saints was the day before the celebration of the 69th anniversary of his monastic consecration, which was planned for April 20.

Father Fanoos was so ascetic that he was harsh on himself. In addition to the hard labor he undertook—most notably cutting stones, which left his hands wrapped in cloth—his loved ones would bring him food in addition to what the monastery provided. Yet he would leave it until it spoiled, as a way of breaking desires and humbling the body. He soared spiritually, reaching great heights, drawing both clergy and laypeople to him through his prayers.

Since receiving the priesthood in 1951 and the rank of Archpriest in 1960, he never left the altar or the prayers of the Divine Liturgy, even after suffering from severe arthritis in his legs, which confined him to a wheelchair during the last ten years of his blessed life.

He continued to celebrate liturgies despite his difficult health, especially in the presence of his spiritual children, many of whom became honored bishops in the Church, including: Anba Daniel (Abbot of the Monastery), Anba Justus (Bishop and Abbot of St. Antony’s Monastery in the Red Sea), Anba Yoannis (Bishop of Assiut), Anba Boutros (General Bishop), Anba Kyrillos (Bishop of Nag’ Hammadi), Anba Youssef (Bishop of Bolivia), Anba Agathon (Bishop of Brazil), and Anba Antonios, Metropolitan of Jerusalem, when he was still a monk.

With his leg illness, he also suffered heart attacks that caused a 95% blockage in his main artery, resulting in repeated lung infections, which peaked during his final treatment period in a Cairo hospital from December until his departure. Some said that he once suffered a severe heart attack in February during which his weak heart stopped for about seven minutes before beating again.

He spent his life in the monastery in his original cell inside the ancient monastery, which had stairs to climb into, until later he moved to one of the new cells on the mountain because of his need for a wheelchair. He lived during the times of several patriarchs: he met Pope Kyrillos VI at the monastery in Bosh, Pope Shenouda III twice (once in the early 1990s during a monastery visit, and again at the Cathedral of Anba Ruweis), and finally Pope Tawadros II during his visit to St. Paul’s Monastery.

He was spiritually connected with all the saints of the Church, especially the Virgin Mary and Archangel Michael. He took St. Paul the Anchorite as his example and model, closely following his life and virtues. He was born into a blessed and devout family that raised him in the love of God.

“The righteous cares for the life of his animal” (Proverbs 12:10). This verse was the secret behind his care for animals of all kinds, feeding them and ensuring their well-being. When he first entered the monastery, only a few monks were there, and they would often leave him alone for days to take care of the monastery’s needs. Yet he was like a shining star to his flourishing monastery, just as his name means.

Immediately after his departure, his spiritual children, led by Anba Daniel, carried him to his monastery. Thousands of his beloved flock came to receive the blessing of the Angel of the Desert, the Elder of Monks, the Man of Miracles endowed with many gifts. His funeral prayers were held in the presence of numerous bishops and monks, especially from the monasteries of St. Paul and St. Antony.

In his farewell address, Anba Yoannis gave a deeply spiritual message titled Our Beloved Father… We congratulate you on safely reaching your eternal home: “Eternity was always in your heart (Ecclesiastes 3:11). You understood more than all of us. You fixed your eyes on Christ and strove greatly until the world completely died in your heart (Galatians 6:14). You attained a very high level of holiness and spiritual insight. Truly you became the sweet fragrance of Christ, attracting all with that fragrance. You did not preach to us with words, but with your life and your pure conduct. What you taught us became a way of life in our hearts, and we will live by it for the rest of our days.”

ولد في 5 أبريل 1929 في قرية دفش بمركز سمالوط محافظة المنيا وتنيح يوم 19 أبريل بعد حياة عامرة عنوانها الجهاد الروحي والعمل الشاق في نسك وتقشف متشبها بآباء الرهبنة الأولى منفذاً وصايا الكتاب المقدس.

كان محباً للجميع دون تمييز لا يرد أحداً ممن كانوا يطلبون إرشاده وصلواته وكان في قمة التواضع كان ينادي أصغر طفل يا عم “فلان” بحنو ومعاملة ملائكية خاصة.

ترك العالم وذهب إلى الدير في سن صغيرة – حوالي 15 عاماً. قصد باب الرهبنة عام 1944 ونال بركتها عام 1947 حيث صار راهباً في سن الثامنة عشر من حياته المباركة وتاريخياً يعتبر يوم اختياره الإلهي للانضمام إلى صفوف الأبرار والأبكار والقديسين هو اليوم السابق للاحتفال بعيد رهبنته التاسع والستون والذي كان مزمعاً الاحتفال به في العشرين من أبريل.

كان القمص فانوس ناسكاً لدرجة القسوة على نفسه فإلى جانب الأعمال الشاقة التي كان يقوم بها وأبرزها تقطيع الحجارة والتي كانت سبب لفه ليده بقطع قماش، كان أحباؤه يأتون له ببعض الأطعمة بجانب ما يقدم له من الدير فكان يتركها أمامه إلى أن تفسد كنوع من كسر الشهوات وإذلال الجسد فكان سامياً في الروح، ووصل إلى درجات عالية جعلت الكثيرين من الإكليروس وعامة الشعب يرتبطون به وبصلواته التي يرفعها عنهم.

منذ أن نال درجة الكهنوت عام 1951 ثم رتبة القمصية عام 1960 لم يبتعد عن المذبح وصلوات القداس الإلهي حتى بعدما أصيب بخشونة شديدة في قدميه تسببت في أن يتنقل على كرسي متحرك في آخر عشر سنوات من حياته المباركة.

كان يصلي القداسات رغم ظروفه الصحية الصعبة خاصة في وجود أبنائه الروحيين ومنهم أساقفة مكرمين في الكنيسة ومنهم الأنبا دانيال رئيس الدير والأنبا يسطس أسقف ورئيس دير الأنبا أنطونيوس بالبحر الأحمر والأنبا يوأنس أسقف أسيوط والأنبا بطرس الأسقف العام والأنبا كيرلس أسقف نجع حمادي والأنبا يوسف أسقف بوليفيا والأنبا أغاثون أسقف البرازيل بالإضافة إلى الأنبا أنطونيوس مطران القدس حينما كان راهباً.

ومع مرض قدميه تعرض إلى أزمات قلبية تسببت في إصابته بضيق في الشريان الرئيسي بنسبة 95% مما نتج عن ذلك إصابته بالتهابات رئوية متكررة وصلت إلى أقصاها في فترة علاجه الأخيرة بإحدى مستشفيات القاهرة والتي امتدت من شهر ديسمبر وحتى نياحته. ذكر البعض أنه تعرض لأزمة قلبية شديدة في فبراير توقف بسببها قلبه الضعيف حوالي سبع دقائق قبل أن يعود للنبض مرة أخرى.

قضي حياته بالدير في قلايته الموجودة داخل الدير الأثري والتي بها سلالم للصعود لداخلها قبل أن ينتقل إلى إحدى القلالي الجديدة بجبل الدير لظروفه الصحية بالتنقل على كرسي متحرك. عاصر عدة بطاركة وتقابل مع البابا كيرلس السادس في مقر الدير ببوش، ومع البابا شنودة الثالث مرتين الأولى في بداية التسعينيات عندما زار قداسة البابا شنودة الدير آنذاك والثانية بالكاتدرائية بالأنبا رويس، وأخيراً مع البابا تواضروس الثاني عند زيارته لدير الأنبا بولا.

ارتبط روحياً بكل قديسي الكنيسة وخاصة السيدة العذراء مريم ورئيس الملائكة الجليل ميخائيل وأخذ الأنبا بولا قدوة ونموذجاً لحياته الروحية فاقترب كثيراً من سيرته ومن فضائله. ينتمي أبونا فانوس إلى أسرة مباركة تقية نشأ فيها على محبة الله.

الصديق يراعي نفس بقيمته.. كانت هذه الآية سر اهتمامه بالحيوانات على اختلاف أنواعها بإطعامها والاهتمام بها وبسلامتها. عندما دخل إلى الدير كان يوجد عدد قليل من الرهبان كانوا يتركونه بمفرده في كل الدير فترات وأيام متتالية لقضاء حاجات الدير فكان كوكباً منيراً كما اسمه لديره العامر.

بعد نياحته مباشرة حمله أبناؤه برئاسة الأنبا دانيال إلى ديره العامر وبعدها تدافع الآلاف من محبيه لنوال بركة ملاك البرية وشيخ الرهبان ورجل المعجزات ذي المواهب المتعددة وتمت الصلاة على جثمانه الطاهر في وجود لفيف من الآباء الأساقفة والرهبان خاصة من ديري الأنبا بولا والأنبا أنطونيوس.

وجاء في كلمة الوداع الروحية العميقة التي ألقاها نيافة الحبر الجليل الأنبا يوأنس والتي كان عنوانها أبانا الحبيب جداً… نهنئك بسلامة الوصول إلى بيتك الأبدي فكم كانت الأبدية في قلبك (جا 3 : 11) وقد فهمت أكثر من كلنا فثبت عينك على المسيح وجاهدت كثيراً حتى مت العالم في قلبك تماماً (غل 6 : 14) فوصلت لدرجة عالية جداً من القداسة والكشف الروحي وكنت بالحقيقة رائحة المسيح الذكية فجذبت الكل بتلك الرائحة الذكية، لم تعظنا بكلمات إنما بحياتك وسيرتك العطرة وما علمتنا إياه، إنما صار في قلبنا منهج حياة كل الأيام فالذي علمتنا إياه سنعيش به باقي عمرنا.
