St George was born in 280 AD in Cappadocia, Asia Minor. St George's father was martyred for being a Christian, when our saint was nearly 17 years old. Our saint grew up with a lot of faith and love in God. After the martyrdom of our saint’s father, his mother had an aim to see her son grow stronger in the faith, through good deeds and virtue. St George joined the Roman Army at 17, gained many victories, and held the rank of Tribune. St George lost his mother when he was nearly 20. From then on, our saint abandoned the pleasures of this world, distributed his possessions among the poor, and set his slaves and maidservants free.

The Emperor Diocletian was ruler of the Roman Empire at the time, and he had just sent an edict to destroy the churches, burn all Christian books, dismiss Christians from their jobs, take all their possessions, make most of them slaves, and force them to offer sacrifices and burn incense to the Roman gods.

St George was in Alexandria at the time. When he saw the edict, he read it and tore it up. The Roman soldiers then took him to Cappadocia to receive punishment. As our saint had great favour with the emperor, the ruler of Cappadocia transferred the matter to Diocletian. Our saint then confessed to the Emperor the true Christian faith. The Emperor jailed our saint and sent a lady to try to seduce him, but instead, our saint converted her to the faith. Hearing this, the Emperor ordered her beheading, and she received the crown of martyrdom.

The Emperor then stretched our saint’s arms and legs with chains and placed a huge stone on his chest. They pulled the saint over iron spikes until his flesh was torn, passed flames over his body to burn his wounds, and spread salt over the wounds to increase the pain. When he was put back in his cell, the Lord appeared to him, embraced him, and strengthened him.

St George endured many more tortures for seven years. Many people were converted to Christianity because of the miracles they witnessed. At one time, St George raised a dead man by the power of the Lord Jesus Christ, and many more believed and were martyred. In the end, when our saint was beheaded, the heathen Roman Emperor Diocletian died a terrible death.

القديس مارجرجس غالبًا ما يُنظر إلى القديس مارجرجس كأمير للشهداء في عصر دقلديانوس، فقد تزعم في منطقة الكبادوك ثورة ضد منشور الاضطهاد للمسيحيين. ولكن المخطوطات القبطية ترى أنه عاش في عصر سابق في زمن ملك غير شرعي يُدعى داديانوس الفارسي، وكان وثنيًا وله سلطان على الكبادوك. لذلك يُذكر في بعض المخطوطات أنه استشهد في أيام "القدم"، أي قبل عصر دقلديانوس.

وُلد القديس مارجرجس في الكبادوك بآسيا الصغرى من أبوين غنيين تقيين من عائلة شريفة. كان والده أناسطاسيوس واليًا على الكبادوك، ووالدته ثاؤبستي من فلسطين، ابنة والي اللد. استشهد والده بسبب إيمانه، وكان جرجس حينها في الرابعة عشرة من عمره. هذا الحدث أشعل في قلبه نار الشهادة.

الأمير جاورجيوس الروماني: بعد استشهاد والده، تولى الأمير يسطس منصب الوالي واعتنى بجاورجيوس ودرّبه على الفروسية، حتى أصبح بطلًا شهيرًا في فلسطين وقائدًا لألف جندي. أرسله يسطس إلى الملك برسالة توصية، فنال لقب "جاورجيوس الروماني"، وقيادة خمسة آلاف جندي، وفرسًا نادرًا.

محبة الوالي له: أحب يسطس جاورجيوس وأراد تزويجه ابنته الوحيدة، فتمت خطبتهما وعُين وكيلًا على أملاكه، لكن الله كان يُعد له طريقًا أعظم.

غيرة الأمير جاورجيوس: عندما سمع أن الملك أصدر منشورًا بإبادة المسيحية، باع كل ممتلكاته ووزعها على الفقراء، ومزّق المنشور علنًا، مهيئًا نفسه للشهادة.

أمام الملك: أُحضر أمام الملك الذي حاول إغراءه بالهدايا والمناصب، فلما فشل عذبه سبع سنوات. وكان الرب يقيمه من الموت ويقويه، مما جعل كثيرين يؤمنون بسببه.

أقوى من السحر والسم: حضر الملك ساحرًا يُدعى أثناسيوس وقدم له سمًا قاتلًا، فشربه مارجرجس بالإيمان ولم يتأذَ، مما دفع الساحر للإيمان. فعصره الملك في معصرة حديدية حتى مات، لكن الرب أقامه ثانية، وآمن الكثيرون.

في هيكل الأوثان: طلب الملك من جاورجيوس أن يذهب معه إلى هيكل الأوثان، ظنًا أنه سيبخر لها. لكن جاورجيوس صرخ نحو تمثال أبولو: "هل أنت إله؟"، فأجاب الصنم: "لست إلهًا"، فصنع علامة الصليب فتهشمت الأصنام. فثار الشعب واغتاظ الملك.

أقوى من الإغراء: أرسل الملك فتاة ماكرة لإغواء جاورجيوس في السجن، لكنه حول السجن إلى هيكل للصلاة، فآمنت الفتاة بالمسيح واستشهدت. تعجب الإمبراطور، وقرر تعذيبه أكثر انتقامًا.

في القصر الملكي: سمعت الملكة ألكسندرة صلاته وسألته عن إيمانه، ففتح الرب قلبها وآمنت. أغضب ذلك الملك فأمر بقتلها، فقال لها جاورجيوس إن دمها معمودية مقدسة، ففرحت ونالت إكليل الشهادة.

استشهاده: بعدما انتشرت المعجزات خشي الملك من الثورة، فأمر بقطع رأسه. استشهد القديس مارجرجس في ٢٣ برمودة من التقويم القبطي.
